Richard and I were living what we thought was the American Dream.
I was the head of the Marketing Department at a good-sized food distributor in Santa Barbara, CA. I had developed that department from the ground up.
Richard was a grocery store manager.
We loved our jobs. We weren’t looking to Sell Avon.
We both had that kind of job where we got there early in the morning and got thrown in a blender, then we whirred around for like 10 or more hours and suddenly we were spit out and realized it was time to go home. But even then, many times I took work home too.
But we loved our jobs. We had “power” jobs. I worked hard all my life and scrapped my way up that job. We had arrived!
We were about $50,000 in credit card debt.
But we thought that as long as we were able to make our minimum payments every month, we were doing great!
We were also both working 60-70 hours per week, and I was commuting 3 hours per day to get to and from work.
I know what that sounds like, right?! Yeah, I’m sure you can hear your dad telling you… When I was young, I had to walk 2 miles to school every day, uphill both ways. Lol.
But seriously, I drove from Ventura to Santa Barbara which should be about 30-40 minutes, but it took me an hour and a half each way every day. There were times when it took me 3-4 hours. Luckily that was not very often.

I’m a geek. The internet was just becoming mainstream.
Richard and I were square dancing at the time. We loved it. It was great stress relief and we made a lot of friends.
But I thought it would be cool if I could create a website with a calendar so anybody could go online and find out where the dances were.
There was a booklet you could subscribe to at the time, but a website could be live, “real-time.”
But the thing is, way back then. Building a website was kind of expensive. The technology was new. The database I needed for the calendar was an additional $150 on top of the hosting expenses. These days that’s pretty much included in your $5-10 hosting.
I didn’t want to charge admission to the website. I wanted it to be available and easy to use for everyone. So, I went looking for a way to pay for it.
Back then, I didn’t know anything about network marketing. All I knew was Avon, Tupperware, and Mary Kay. Avon was promoting that you could be an eRep so I thought I could sign up, promote my Avon link on my square dance website and help cover costs.
That’s all I was ever going to do. Never in a million years did I think I would grow up to be the Avon lady.
But Avon may have thought they were online and you could be an eRep, but they didn’t really have the technology yet.
There were serious problems. I was losing customers to Avon itself, or just losing them because they couldn’t figure out the website.

We started passing out Avon brochures to sell Avon.
So we started taking brochures to the dances. That worked and started bringing in a nice little side income.
Richard got the idea to see if we could take it a little further and pass books around the neighborhood.
That helped us gain a little more income. We were totally happy with that at the time.

But then our eyes were opened.
About a year into our business, Avon had a Home for the Holidays in Los Angeles.
We thought it would be great to see the upcoming holiday products so Richard and I attended that.
While we were there, in the general session, we were all seated in the auditorium, and Avon had the leadership Reps stand up.
There were very few at the time, and in my district, there was one lady who was Advanced Unit Leader.
I think she was the highest rank at the time in my district.
Advanced Unit Leader was still just getting started, but at that point, you had 3 Representatives on your team.
So, this is going to sound a little bad… I didn’t really think this lady was super smart.
But I was sitting next to the District Manager and I leaned over and asked her how much this lady was making in leadership.
The District Manager told me she thought it was about $300/month.
So, $300/month sure as heck didn’t sound like much.
But as soon as she said that this thought came into my head, “Heck, I can blow that out of the water.”
I guess that’s how my mind works. I didn’t even consider that $300 was much.
The funny thing is on the ride home, talking to Richard, I found out he had thought the same thing. Lol.

We decided to get busy and Sell Avon and see what would happen.
I mean, we had great jobs. We loved our jobs. But we still couldn’t just take time off when we wanted, and we had to work so many hours every week.
So here’s the thing…
It started slow, of course, and we had very little time to work our business.
So, it was like $300/month, and then $500. And then $1,000 and then a couple thousand, and it kept growing over time.
But even an extra $300/month on top of your regular income can make a huge difference in your life!

We started seeing and looking at things differently.
We started to realize that debt wasn’t good.
Meeting the minimum payments was keeping us hostage.
So we started paying off our debt.
And we started realizing that we could have that freedom to live our lives the way we wanted.

I never wanted to be an Avon lady, but if it could offer this, I was all in.
Within two years, we had paid off our credit card debt and I was able to “retire” from my job.
It wasn’t like we made so much money with Avon. I’m not trying to say it’s a get-rich-quick thing. It’s a business like any other.
But as a result of our personal growth and being able to see a new possibility for our lives, we made decisions to change it.
We actually downsized our house, as part of our plan to get out of debt.
A couple of years later, we “retired” Richard.
We were 100% debt-free – no house payments, no car payments, no credit card debt!
I couldn’t believe how free that left us.
Now we were living the life of our dreams and could travel and live our lives on our own terms.
At this point, I haven’t worked in a job for years and years.
And I would never go back! I love my life!

Avon has been a great blessing in our lives.
It has enabled us to continue to live debt-free and not have to work in the corporate world.

Has it been easy?
No, not at all. It’s been very difficult at times.
But it wasn’t easy when I was working in my power job either, right! It’s all relative.
I mean… You are going to work hard in life anyway…
