I was talking to a new person yesterday, and afterwards I thought it might be something that I should address. There is a misconception about selling Avon, or any other direct sales or network marketing business.

So when we were having our discussion, and I was trying to clarify where she was coming from, she finally said, “Those businesses only make money by getting people like you to buy in and pay a fee to start up. And they convince you to buy their products. That’s how they make money off you.”
Haha! I mean… what does that even mean?
And so, I smiled and explained to her how it really works.

Here is how the Direct Sales / Network Marketing profession really works
In this case we’re talking about Avon. But there are many companies which use the same business model.
So, Avon has a line of products it wants to acquire customers for.
Instead of hiring and paying salespeople, they instead kind of franchise it out.
They let people start their own business for themselves within the company umbrella, which allows the Avon Representative to leverage all the company brand, assets, products, marketing, training and fulfillment.
The Avon Representative is now a new business owner and can go sell the product and earn commissions.
Avon only pays when value is brought, meaning when customers are acquired and sales are made. No sales, no cost to Avon.
It is the perfect business model for a company like Avon.

The Avon Representative (Independent business owner) who recruited this new Representative into Avon now has them as part of their business team structure, which is the important part.
Avon has money in the budget to pay the business owner (mentor) who recruited the new person and helped onboard and train them so that they become successful and sell more products.
When that new person gets paid for acquiring customers, the ‘upline’ owner/mentor who brought them into Avon and helped them learn the ropes also gets paid an override commission on those sales.
