How Much Skin Care Product Should You Apply?

When it comes to skin care, we often talk about which products to use and what order to use them in.  But we never really talk about how much of them we should actually be using.

I mean… many times you see directions that say “slather-on” moisturizer, “dab” eye cream and apply a thin layer of serum.

But what does that even mean?

You can get better results from your skin care products by using them the right way.

Let’s look at some guidelines for how much you should be using.

Cleanser

Whether you choose a gel or a cream cleanser, a dime-sized amount is all you need.

For foaming cleanser, one pump should get the job done.

This might not seem like much, but as you add water and massage it into your skin, it will expand into a lather that’s enough to wash your face with.

If you’re looking for a gentle-cleanse, wash up with belif Aqua Bomb Jelly Cleanser, which begins as a jelly formula and turns into a foamy lather as you apply with water.

For more ways to cleanse, discover our collection of cleansers.

For best results, wash once in the morning and twice in the evening if you wear makeup, or only once at night if you don’t wear makeup.

If you use too much:

Mostly it’s not the end of the world, except it’s just not needed and will cause you to go through a lot of product more quickly, with no extra benefits.

Overusing anti-acne cleansers can leave your skin dry and irritated.

If you use too little:

Not using enough cleanser can leave dirt, debris and makeup on your skin.

This could cause clogged pores and lead to breakouts.

Serum

Two pumps.

Serums are treatments designed to target specific skin concerns.

They are typically lightweight and easily absorbed so you only need a small amount – two pumps are more than enough.

Serums give your skin a concentrated boost of ingredients that help with hydration, exfoliation, acne, or dull skin.

Some of our best serums, which help improve skin’s appearance while infusing it with nutrients, include Anew Vitamin C Brightening Serum and Anew Hydra Fusion 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Serum.

If you use too much:

Using too much can leave active ingredients sitting on your skin.

Depending on the product, this could lead to stinging or peeling.

If you use too little:

If you don’t use enough, you won’t get the maximum benefits from. The serum.

Daily Moisturizer

Two dips, or about a nickel size amount.

Most moisturizing creams come in containers.

Dip your index finger into the container two times, and this should be the perfect amount of moisturizer for your skin.

If your moisturizer is in a tube, you can also use two light squeezes of the formula.

To apply, simply smooth the moisturizer over your face and neck.

We recommend a daily moisturizer like Anew Ultimate Multi-Performance Day Cream SPF 25, which provides anti-aging benefits while helping protect skin from the sun.

If you use too much:

Too much moisturizer can make your face shiny and lead to breakouts.

It can also feel heavy on your skin and make it harder to apply your makeup.

If you use too little:

You won’t get the full benefits of the moisturizer.

Your skin might feel tight, flake, or even look dull because it’s not as hydrated as it could be.

Sunscreen

Many daytime moisturizers include sunscreen, although the trend lately is to no include it.  This helps the moisturizer to be able to work for more people, and you can apply sunscreen as needed.

If not, use a grape-sized amount for your face after applying your moisturizer.

For the rest of your body, you need enough sunscreen to fit in a shot glass.

We recommend the Anew Hydra Fusion Daily Beauty Defense SPF 50.

It contains Avon’s highest sunscreen protection in an ultra-lightweight, quickly absorbed lotion that glides on smoothly.

If you use too much:

When it comes to sunscreen, there’s really no such thing as using too much.

If you use too little:

You could get sunburned.

Over time, you might also get sun-damaged skin that looks old before its time.

You could also get skin cancer.

Night Cream

Two dips, or about a nickel size amount.

Night cream has the same consistency as a day cream; therefore, the two dips is also a great amount to go by.

Again, if your formula is in a tube, two squeezes is the equivalent.

Before you go to bed, smooth night cream over your skin after applying eye cream.

Opt for a high-performance formula like Anew Platinum Night Cream, which helps reduce the look of wrinkles while visibly firming and lifting skin.

If you use too much:

Too much moisturizer can make your face shiny and lead to breakouts.

It can also feel heavy on your skin, and uncomfortable while trying to sleep.

If you use too little:

You won’t get the full benefits of the moisturizer.

Your skin might feel tight, flake, or even look dull because it’s not as hydrated as it could be.

Eye Cream

One small dip, about the size of a sunflower seed.

The under-eye area is very delicate.

When applying your daily eye cream, less is more—all you need is one light dip with your index finger.

This is also why eye cream packaging is the smallest of all skin care products—because so little is needed.

We recommend using a tiny amount around each eye (about the size of a sunflower seed), then returning any excess cream to the container.

Anew Clinical Eye Lift Pro Dual Eye System, our best-selling eye cream, features a gel and cream formula that will help make your eyes look and feel dramatically firmer while visibly reducing under-eye shadows.

If you use too much:

Too much eye cream can clog your pores and irritate your eyes.

It can also make it challenging to apply your makeup.

If you use too little:

Skimping on eye cream can leave that delicate skin dehydrated and keep your makeup from lying on the skin properly.
