How A Traveling Book Salesman In 1886 Changed The Course Of Skincare Forever
I don’t know if you’ve heard the story of Avon, but it’s actually a pretty amazing story about how David H McConnell helped women start their own business and Sell Avon.
So, I thought I’d share that with you today.
Remember the show Little House in the Prairie?
This is exactly the time frame, Little House in the Prairie.
Things were different back in 1886.
David H. McConnell Was a Traveling Book Salesman
He was a pretty innovative man.
He made his living going door-to-door selling books.
And he made up these perfume samples… he just made them up…
And he started giving out the perfume samples to get his foot in the door and to entice women to buy his books.
Then David McConnell had an Epiphany!
It didn’t take David long to notice that women loved the perfume samples more than they loved the books.
He was a smart man, and so he says to himself,
“Oh, well maybe I need to be selling perfume. This is where the market is. Look, these women are going crazy over it.”
And so, he started the company California Perfume Company in 1886.

David McConnell Saw the Power of Women
David H. McConnell felt that women were a vastly under-tapped resource.
This was unusual for the times.
Think about it… back then, there was nothing for women.
If a woman held a job, maybe there was an occasional teacher, right?
But mostly they were maids and housekeepers, and maybe they worked in a store –
the few stores there were back then…
But there just wasn’t a lot happening for women back then.
David saw the potential for women, both as customers and as workers.

David McConnell Gave the Opportunity to Sell Avon to Women
And so, it was 1886 when he hired Mrs. P.F.E. Albee and she became the very first representative for this California Perfume Company.
Her name was actually Persis Foster Eames Albee, but she went by P.F.E.
Not only did he hire her as a saleswomen, but he also gave her the power and the ability to start her own business.
And so P.F.E. quickly recruited a whole team of housewives from all the different communities around the area.
David would then ship these products to them, and they would sell in their areas.
Kind of sounds like the Avon Lady in the ’50’s, right?!
So that’s kind of how it was.
But then it kept growing.
And then Mrs. P.F.E. Albee became the first traveling Avon Sales Representative.
She carried a little suitcase, and she went on the train and the stagecoach…
Remember, this was Little House in the Prairie times – it was just amazing!
In fact, it was 50 years before women could even vote.
David gave her the opportunity to build a business and build a sales team and create earnings opportunities for women.

Then David McConnell Started Expanding the Product Line
The very first product was a perfume called Little Dot perfume.
But then the product line quickly expanded to other perfumes, and then makeup and bath products.
In 1896, the first skincare product was witch hazel, and I’m sure you’re familiar with that.
That was our first skincare product.
Avon was Launched
And then, in 1928, David visited William Shakespeare’s legendary home, Stratford-on-Avon, England.
And he fell in love with the town and so he started branding the products under the Avon name.
And then, a couple of years later, the company name was officially changed to Avon.
David H McConnell was a Visionary.
It’s pretty amazing what he did.
He gave women the ability to create their own income, to be self-sufficient, to use their talents and abilities…
…that back then people didn’t even acknowledge, and he allowed them to start their own business.
He allowed them to recruit other Representatives to work with them.
He kind of started the Direct Sales business model, in the 1800’s.
And so, Avon continued to grow and flourish.
Eventually he died and his son took over, and eventually it became a big public company and all that.

Avon has been cutting-edge from the very beginning.
In 1961, Avon launched Skin So Soft – a product that still known and loved to this day!
In 1990 we were the very first company to bring Alpha-Hydroxy Acid technology to the mass market.
Before that, it was only available in doctor’s offices.
And now Avon had a way to put it into products and make it work.
And so that was Anew.
And then we were the first to bring Retinol in a way that could be used in a skincare line…
…and then continued to innovate many, many, many, other cutting-edge products and technologies.
It was also in the 1990’s that Avon started the Breast Cancer crusade…
…and has put millions of dollars into women and breast health, research & treatments.
And then in 2019, Avon was sold to LG Home & Health.
Yes, the Korean Company that makes phones, and TV’s and Refrigerators. 🙂
They also have the #1 Selling Beauty Products in the world!
