Get Better At The Unimportant To Achieve Success!
Some of the most successful people make it a point to excel at the unimportant. In fact, that’s a big part of their success.
I believe that success leaves clues, and if we watch what the successful people are doing, we can learn a lot from them.
And so, I love to watch and learn from highly successful people.
People are often extremely focused on only the most important tasks in their days.
This is understandable because it shows that they’re driven towards their goal.
And it’s very important because those most important tasks are just that… most important.
I mean… if you want to be successful, it’s those important tasks that you need to focus on…
But there does also have to be some understanding about how their daily lives work.
Not every day is the most important one, and you’re not deciding your future at every second of the day.
Really, there’s a lot of unimportant stuff going on in your day.
While you shouldn’t spend too much time on it, there are many benefits that you can get out of mastering your unimportant daily tasks.
There are all kinds of little things that you do throughout the day that you probably don’t give much thought to.
But getting good at doing those things helps your whole day run much smoother than you might think.
Your Daily Routine
We tall a lot about your daily routine. About how it can really make a difference in setting up or ending your day.
Having your daily routine down to a science means that you won’t have to spend time on things that don’t help you as much, so that you can spend more time on the things that do matter.
Take note of how long it takes you to do certain unimportant tasks throughout the day.
It could be things like making your bed or taking out the recycling bin, or whatever is involved in your daily routine.
With each day, you should aim to get through this routine quicker than you did the day before.
This doesn’t mean that you have to sprint to the dumpster to take out your trash,
But maybe just spend less time in bed in the morning looking at your phone or take a quicker shower.
By becoming efficient and good at doing all of these little things, you’re going to save yourself a lot of time and energy… and especially brain power that you can devote to other things that you want or need to do throughout the day.
Cut Down On Decisions You Need to Make
A simple way to save brain power is to cut down on the number of decisions you need to make.
For example, instead of wasting energy on trying to decide what to wear to work in the morning, have it chosen the night before, so you should be able to quickly get up and get ready so that you can get to work.
In fact, looking at the super successful people….
Some of the most successful people have already figured this out.
While he was President, Barack Obama once told Vanity Fair that he never makes a decision about what to wear:
He said, “You’ll see I wear only gray or blue suits. I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make.”
And other successful people simply wear the same thing every day.
Mark Zuckerberg sports his iconic gray t-shirt. Steve Jobs became famous for a black turtleneck, jeans, and New Balance sneakers.
Look For Ways To Do Things Faster.
Look at some of the things you do over and over.
This can be as simple as learning common keyboard shortcuts or could even include automating entire sections of your business.
In fact, I do automate some of the most important tasks in my business. Tasks that need to be done over and over again like getting brochures to everybody and following up with everyone I got a brochure too.
And I teach my team to do the same thing.
This frees me up to build my business, meet more people and provide excellent customer service with the customers I already have.
Or it could mean delegating some of the tasks that you don’t have to personally do.
I’ve been involved with the DSWA – the Direct Sales Women’s Alliance – for years.
It’s a great organization that offers training and help in building your direct sales business.
One of the things Nikki Keohohou, who’s the founder of that organization, has always said, and I love…
She says, “Hire a wife!”
Seriously!
Obviously, our house needs to be cleaned so we can be happy and comfortable! But we don’t have to be the one to do it.
I pay to have my house cleaned every two weeks. So then at least I know the heavy cleaning is done and I don’t have to worry about it.
That’s a form of delegation too, right!?
When You Excel At The Unimportant, You Free Yourself Up To Do More
Finding ways to excel at the unimportant helps you to get those unimportant – but still very important – things done as quickly and easily as possible so you can spend your time, energy, and even brain power on those most important things in your business or your job or your life.
Having everything done easily also sets you in the right mood for the day to come.
If you’re struggling with some common morning tasks, you might find that you’re a bit grumpier further on in the day.
This is because you spent more energy on a less important task, and because you could’ve been frustrated being hung up on such a small detail.
Controlling your day in this way means you won’t be spending too much time on the wrong things in the wrong places while ignoring your priority tasks. \
You will work more efficiently.
Either way, becoming more efficient with all those little tasks in your day will greatly improve your life.
Now I’d love to hear from you.
