6 Amazing Benefits Of Lifelong Learning
If you are like me, you probably take it for granted that consciously engaging in lifelong learning is worth it, well… just because.
From the time we’re children, we’re pushed to learn things.
By adulthood, most people are somewhat relieved when the learning portion of their lives is over.
Not me. Maybe I’m just weird. But I LOVE to learn. I could be a full-time college student for the rest of my life!
And that’s a lot of what my daily Facebook lives are all about.
Every morning, I strive to learn something new or to look at something in a different way, and then I share that with you.
And so I share a little of me and what I learned… but the real key is I learned something in the process.
Saying goodbye to learning isn’t a good idea.
The reality is that most of us have goals or interests outside of our formal schooling and jobs.
This is part of what it means to be human: we have a natural curiosity and we are natural learners.
We develop and grow thanks to our ability to learn.
Personal fulfillment and development refer to natural interests, curiosity, and motivations that lead us to learn new things.
We learn for ourselves, not for someone else.
So, let’s talk about some of amazing benefits of always learning.
Solutions Are Easier to Find
A brain kept sharp through continuous learning is going to be better at finding solutions to problems.
If you’re always learning, your cognitive muscle is kept in shape, and so you’ll have better cognitive function overall.
And you’ll be better at finding solutions because there’s just more knowledge available to draw on to find a solution.
You Just Sound Smarter
Who doesn’t want that, right!?
When you constantly challenge yourself to find out new things, it shows up in your conversation.
You’re more up on current events, and your ability to talk intelligently in social situations increases.
Knowledge also raises your cred on social media, especially on sites such as LinkedIn, which is essential when job hunting.
You’re Better Prepared
Not sure what to do in a crisis? Spend time learning.
By understanding the basics of first aid or how things are supposed to function in your workplace, you will be better able to handle an emergency.
And if you’re learning new ways to grow your business or to get better at what you do – whether it’s in a business, in your job, or sports, or even a hobby…
When things up come up or a crises happens, you’ll have more of what it takes to better handle that.
Your Mind Sparks
Looking for an idea or new perspective?
Perhaps you want to be more creative? Perhaps you want to take your business to the next level or try something new.
You can easily enhance each of those areas through learning.
You Become a More Capable and Confident Employee
When you’re always learning in the workplace, you become more self-assured in your work.
And this is a feeling you’ll start carrying with you into other aspects of your life.
It’s this attitude that gets you noticed, especially when the time comes for promotions.
If you have your own business, it’s this same attitude that will get you noticed with new potential customers or even team members.
It’s Good for Your Brain
Finally, perhaps one of the most important reasons for pursuing knowledge is that it’s good for your brain.
Studies have shown a brain engaged and continuously challenged with new information is sharper and has better cognitive skills.
But the benefits don’t stop there either.
Learning means your brain keeps growing, creating new neural pathways.
Have you ever studied the neural pathways thing?
It’s amazing!
As you learn new things, and try new things, and get outside of your comfort zone… your brain actually builds new like electrical pathways through your brain.
Keep learning and getting outside of your comfort zone and those new pathways will become strong and it literally changes the way you think.
Pretty cool, huh!
Learning things has also been proven to help prevent Alzheimer’s and other effects of dementia.
It has even shown to reverse some of the impact of those issues as you age.
No wonder it’s a good reason to keep learning as you grow older!
Lifelong learning is something you want to make a priority in your life
…and not just because it’s ‘good for you’ like taking that proverbial vitamin pill.
Chasing after learning can be both enlightening and fun and will serve you well throughout your entire life.
With that in mind, it’s an easy decision to become a lifelong learner.
Only through knowledge can you truly become your very best self.
